A vibrant meeting place for day visitors
The outdoor museum is sweet and informative
Maria, 2018
Márkanbáiki is an open-air museum with a focus on Sámi culture. Discover Sápmi's history and find out how we once lived according to our eight seasons and survived a nomadic life in the Arctic. You can also learn more about the modern lifestyle, reindeer herding and cultural expressions such as art and poetry. On top of this, you can visit some of our reindeer that graze daily at the museum grounds!
In the area we also got a handicraft shop where you can support our local creators by buying a handmade souvenir from the area. This is connected to our restuarant Ovttas, where we serve both lunch and fika next to our crackling fire.
Opening times:
Museum open 10.00 - 17.00 daily
Fika and lunch at restaurant Ovttas 11.00 - 15.30
1 september our museum, shop and restaurant Ovttas are closed due to inventory.
All exhibitions are outdoors and we recommend our guests to wear their warmest clothes to enjoy the visit, regardless of temperature.
The outdoor exhibitions contain lots of information about the Sámi culture. With everything from old buildings to modern technology, we both create a great experience and the opportunity to learn something new. The reindeer that graze on our grounds are a part of the exhibitions. You are more than welcome to go into the corrals and say hi to them during your visit!
