our story

Nutti Sámi Siida

Origins rooted in Sámi Heritage

Nutti Sámi Siida was founded by Nils Torbjörn Nutti, a Sámi reindeer herder from Saarivuoma sameby, and his partner, Carina Pingi from Gabna sameby. Both Nils and Carina grew up immersed in the reindeer herding traditions and Sámi lifestyle of the Jukkasjärvi region. Their deep connection to their cultural heritage inspired them to share authentic Sámi experiences with visitors from around the world.

History

From Reindeer Herding to ecotourism

In the winter of 1996, facing challenging grazing conditions, Nils and Carina began feeding their reindeer in corrals. To support this effort, they collaborated with the nearby Icehotel to offer visitors insights into Sámi culture and reindeer herding. This initiative proved successful, leading to the establishment of Nutti Sámi Siida in 1999. The term “Siida” refers to a traditional Sámi winter group, reflecting the company’s roots in Sámi traditions.
