Ovttas Story and Meaning

During the nomadic era, Jukkasjärvi – Čohkkiras naturally became a meeting place, a crossroads where paths intertwined and destinies connected. Čohkkiras, a Northern Sámi word, means “meeting place by the water” — a space where people gathered to trade, socialize, and rest before embarking on their next journey.

Today, you find yourself here with us at Nutti Sámi Siida, just as our ancestors did long ago. In our restaurant, Ovttas, meaning “together” in Northern Sámi, we come together to share meals and moments. There is no Wi-Fi here—because we want to encourage you to be truly present, to connect, and to experience togetherness, just as it has always been at this place.
