Miessemánnu – month of the reindeer calf

Be our guest among our precious reindeer herd. It is a unique opportunity to watch new-born reindeer calves taking their first steps, and to receive first-hand information by reindeer herders who conduct reindeer husbandry as a lifestyle based on traditional Sámi knowledge, and that is challenged by many factors. You round off your visit by savouring a traditional Sámi meal in a lávvu-tent whilst sitting around a crackling open fire to get a real taste of Sápmi.

Our guide meets you in Kiruna or Jukkasjärvi for transfer by minibus, approx. 1.5 hour one-way, towards Silkkimuotka reindeer corrals, northeast of Kiruna.
Upon arrival to the reindeer in the forest in the middle of Sápmi, the reindeer herder welcomes you. Here are hundreds of reindeer fenced in, and we carefully and silently try to get closer our dear companions, the reindeer.

This is a very sensitive time of the year, grazing is prioritised and the females need strength and privateness to be able to give birth to their calves.
If weather and other circumstances allow, there is also the unique opportunity to see some new-born reindeer calves. You will learn about reindeer, reindeer husbandry and its challenges as climate change for instance.

The bright hours of the midnight sun are on their way and provide a wonderful setting for the visit to the kingdom of the reindeer.
These reindeer will be released to the mountain area when the calves have grown a bit and are able to embark on a long migration journey.

After carefully observing the reindeer herd, a traditional suovas meal (salted and smoked reindeer meat) that is cooked over open fire put on gáhkku (Sámi flat bread) with a click of lingonberry jam is served, along with steeped coffee/tea, all in the lávvu-tent. While the reindeer herder meal is taken in, the reindeer herder will answer your questions.
In the late evening, transfer back towards Jukkasjärvi and Kiruna, full of wonderful memories.
